The modern(20-21 century) History of afghanistan includes the period of secular state . It was destroyed in 1978 with the powers that was fed the islamic Revolution happened in the neighborhooding Iran.
Situation was more heater by the Democratic Republic Of Afghanistan forces that wanted more secular state and modernization and did their revolution, seizing power in 1978 year.
USSR tried to fix them failures with its own reforms. At first with help advisers. But quickly felt that situation only become more hot. That finally quickly led the situation to the war conflict.
At the end of the Soviet invasion, the political powers in USSR recognized the impossibility of the deal with the islamic Afghan rebels(who's get support from the USA, Saudi Arabian republic and some other states.) and finished there mission.
In the next years the Afghan rebels who fought against Soviet Army, lost most of their country. They lost to the more powerful movement TALIBAN.
Which was more powerful, because of more radical islamism. Which set even more restrictions on womens leading them to produce more fighters than former Soviet opponent, helping them to sized power on the most Afganistan territory.
And in 2001 came Americans. They used the connection between the TALIBAN and attacks on the World Trade Centers in New York in 2001 in September for invasion.
At the beginning that looks excellent. The quickly turned the Afganistan into the secular state, allow to women all, even to become an army officers.
However that did not lead to the decreasing fertility rate in country, and they continued to produce a lot of rebels, mainly with islamic slope...
20 years of promotion to the rest of the World, that Afghanistan can be a normal country crashed just in a few days.
What's next? That a rhetorical question. If you know a little bit his history you understand that the situation in the country will never be stable.
Interesting fact that in the time of Alexander the Great it was much more developed nation then now. Since that time the situation only become more worse then an every previous one.
However if the most powerful state in the History failed with the turning country into the normal state we can't dream about that. Afganistan the terrible territory forever. And as one old afganian rebel told the russain journalst in the interview - "We never get tired of the war."
